If you are reading this, chances are you’re sitting at or near a table. But if you’re like me, there’s also a good chance that your table is plain and boring. These tables, however, are anything but – each is a great example of functional design or even art that puts my poor, boring little desk to shame.
Given the amount of work that any given table does on a daily basis (especially now, when more and more of us spend significant portions of our day in front of a computer), it would certainly make sense to pay more attention to how they’re made and how they function. This list attempts to take all of these things into account – some are simply coffee tables with an attention-grabbing design meant to decorate the room, while others also introduce some sort of additional functionality as well. And some, like the glacial table or the nautilus table, are works of art in their own right. Some even help your pets feel more at home.
Despite its ubiquitous nature now, the table undertook a lot of transformations to get where it is now. The Egyptians were the first to use the earliest tables, although the first were not much more than stone platforms that were used for eating rather than for sitting. Tables were also embraced by the Greeks and Romans, who seemed to use them more often than the Egyptians did.
