Leader Design Studio designed Lotus On Orange dream home. This impressive single-family residence is in Sarasota, Florida, United States.
An Impressive architectural legacy inspires one couple’s new modern, high-tech home near downtown Sarasota.
Lotus On Orange By Leader Design Studio:
Andy Tugendhat’s grandparents owned the Villa Tugendhat in Brno, Czech Republic. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed the house in 1930 and is now a museum. Andy and his wife, Karin, used their family history and passion for environmentally responsible building to design a new modern home in Sarasota. Their home is small but stands out in its historic neighborhood because of its modern design. The neighbors like the home and often visit to compliment the owners.
The couple wanted to keep the building small, adding a screened cage to double the living space. The house has a large courtyard with an outdoor fireplace, seating areas, and a swimming pool. The rooftop has a screen enclosure that draws inspiration from how other architects handled caged rooms. The home has two additional courtyards with Japanese-inspired planters. The entry court has a pond with lotus flowers and fish. Visitors walk on concrete pads over the pond to reach the front door. A water fountain provides white noise to create a calming atmosphere. The home has polished concrete floors that unify the interior living spaces and the outside areas.
Josh Wynne Construction managed the sustainable design of the home. In contrast, Michael Gilkey of M.A. Gilkey Landscapes designed the outdoor spaces. The team has worked together on several other environmentally friendly homes in Sarasota.
Andy Tugendhat sees a connection between his grandparents’ Villa Tugendhat and the Sarasota School of Architecture. Both represent the international modern architecture style that began in Europe in the 1920s. Mies’ work represents the Bauhaus movement linked to the Sarasota School of Architecture.
The house has impact-resistant, insulated, and tinted glass that provides passive ventilation and natural daylighting. The technology is up-to-date and helps the house generate 7 percent more power than it uses. The house is LEED Platinum and Net Zero Energy certified, reflecting its commitment to green building.
