Jakarta-based studio TWS & Partners completed the Static House project in 2010. This 7,530 square foot contemporary residence is located in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Context and Location
The client came to us with a particular vision of a garden house, which can maximize a correlation to outdoor space from within. From the client’s brief of the room program, we come to quite a vast area of 800 square meters, which should be located within a limited site. The site is a 600 square meter land area situated in medium dense, semi-detached, without any physical and building typology from one another.
Architectural Concept
In response to the limited site compared to the enormous program. We try to elaborate and combine two courtyard spaces arranged vertically and superimposed on each other. The first courtyard was put on the raised ground floor, which can act as a transition and buffer area from public space in front and rear, semi-public living room.
The second courtyard is located on the second floor, which will act as an intermediate outdoor space between the primary bedroom and the surrounding neighborhood. Consequently, the above layer of the courtyard should be able to be penetrated by sunlight and natural air to give life to the courtyard below.
We decide to apply a shallow reflecting pond within the above courtyard and use glass as a base o it to allow daylight to penetrate the courtyard and room below. The shadow of moving water during daytime from the reflecting pond gives a sense of nature inside the foyer room below. We also craft a few voids/holes within the second-layer courtyard to provide access to daylight and air in the space below.
The swimming pool was located on the first courtyard, ground floor, according to the required zoning, and at the same time, act a daylight reflector to this outdoor space. The material used in this building has a light and bright, earthy color scheme to achieve a sense of natural, contemplative, and serene living environment.
Interior Concept
Using a modern, simple, and minimalistic furniture style, we try to create a warm palette, combining with some racial and classic pieces of decorative furniture and artwork. The marble floor in the public living and dining room is a white leather sofa background, combined with a Ligne Roset standing lamp and a modern glass stainless steel coffee table.
The custom-made main entrance, a wooden door, was made by Kayun (a wooden artist from Bali) and designed with a specific floral pattern to reflect the courtyard inside. The dining table is also made from one piece natural finished wooden slab, juxtapose with an antique, decorative antique Chinese cabinet set in front of the khaki, wallpaper finish, background.”
